Artists. We’re a unique breed. We’re the dreamers, the rebels, the catalysts for change. We are driven to create that which reflects our perfect and imperfect world, and to provoke thought that provokes people to provoke progress. We are practiced at being courageous. We have to be –creating something from nothing is an act of bravery.
But these times demand a new courage. A greater resolve to fight against the rhetoric of exclusion and a greater resolve even to exist as our unique selves, be they female, or brown, or bisexual, or religious, or differently abled.
Many in our community feel less safe now than they did just weeks ago, so we want to be abundantly clear that our classrooms, our halls, our offices, our studios, our theatres, and our galleries welcome everyone. We welcome the typical and the different. We welcome questions and risk-taking. We welcome mistakes and dissent. We welcome it all.
We welcome you.
The University of Utah College of Fine Arts continually works to be a safe place. We are driven by our core values of communication, civility, and respect for the individual, creativity/imagination, and community. And anywhere we don’t fully succeed in this realm, we invite critique and collaboration in being better, because it takes all of us together to create a space truly reflective and respectful of the diversity of our humanity.
So cue the soundtrack of progress, because we’re going to work to ensure the future we produce and record is one of inclusion and justice.
